How to Catholic: Jesus Prayer (video)

Below is my latest video on Catholic spirituality (ok, so this one is more Eastern Orthodox). I hope you enjoy:

Here is the Bjork video of her Jesus Prayer song. I love it.

  1. Really enjoyed this video, and I do understand that concern about “vain repetition” from a Protestant perspective. I had been told the same thing, along with how prayer needs to be from your heart. But so often, my heart does not know what to pray. At all.

That changed when I started attending an Episcopal Church and discovered The Book Of a Common Prayer. Just one part that I really like is “Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us.” (or “me” depending on what’s going on) I think about that off and on during the day sometimes, and it has real meaning. I also like the Collect prayers, and my favorite to start the day begins “Lord God, almighty and everlasting Father, you have brought us in safety to this new day…” Even though it uses “us,” that little Word forces me to think beyond myself and to be thankful that everyone I care about has been brought safely to the new day. Anyway, that’s my two cents worth! I believe that these types of prayers come to us from the Catholic Church as well? Great video!

    1. You know, my first introduction to written prayers in worship was a Lutheran Church, and I felt kind of the same way you did. Maybe not that my heart didn’t know what to pray (though that probably would have been the more humble track, because often it’s true even if I think it’s not), but that it seems like there are some things just way too important to forget when I’m praying. I forget the Lutheran one now, but I remember thinking at the time that it was so well-crafted and hit so many important points that I can easily forget. Thanks for sharing your two cents! 🙂 I appreciate it. I should pick up The Book of Common Prayer, too. My wife grew up Episcopalian as well. We probably have it somewhere around the house.

  2. I must say it was hard to find your blog in search results.
You write great posts but you should rank your blog higher in search engines.

If you don’t know how to do it search on youtube: how to rank a website Marcel’s way
